Phillip Island, 140 km from Melbourne (about 1.5 to 2 hours by road), is a small nature reserve island, 26 km long and 9 km wide, that is a world leader in eco-tourism. Every year millions of visitors come to see the natural wonder of the Penguin Parade: every evening, right on schedule, the world's smallest penguins, no taller than about 40 cm, march up from the ocean to their burrows in the dunes. The west of the island is also home to one of the largest colonies of fur seals in Australia (more than 16,000), and the island has a unique koala sanctuary where koalas live in natural conditions and are easy to see.
