Visas
Most visitors from outside Australia need a visa or an electronic travel authority before they fly. The right one depends on your passport, so please check with the official government websites below. Apply well before you travel, and make sure your passport is valid for your whole trip.
Common ways to enter Australia as a tourist
- eVisitor (subclass 651): a free online authority for passport holders of many European countries.
- Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601): an electronic authority for passport holders of eligible countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan and South Korea. Applications are made online or through the official Australian ETA app.
- Visitor visa (subclass 600): for travellers who are not eligible for the eVisitor or the ETA. This is a full visa application and can take longer, so allow extra time.
- New Zealand citizens do not need to apply for a visa before travelling to Australia.
Travelling on to New Zealand? Many visitors need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before they fly, and some also pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy. Check the official New Zealand Immigration website for your nationality.
Tips for a smooth application
- Apply only through the official government websites or the official app, not through third-party sites that charge extra fees.
- Check your details carefully. The name and passport number must match your passport exactly.
- Keep a copy of your visa or authority confirmation with your travel documents. It is linked electronically to your passport and checked at the airport.
- Ask your airline or a travel agent if you are unsure what you need.
- If you are visiting for work, study or a longer stay, a different visa applies.
