Barossa Valley

The Barossa Valley, only an hour's drive north-east of Adelaide, is one of Australia's best-known and oldest wine-growing regions - some of its vines, planted over 150 years ago, still bear fruit today.

The valley's Mediterranean climate and soil are perfect for producing full-bodied reds and robust whites and South Australia's fame as the country's leading wine producer has given the state a special style and popularity that is known around the wine-growing world.

Surrounded by fields of grapevines, the valley's small towns are a colourful collection of historic buildings and churches that reflect its settlement by religious and political refugees from Prussia in the 1840s.

There are more than 150 wineries in the valley, ranging from the giants of the Australian wine industry like Wolf Blass, which exports its wines to over 80 countries, to numerous family-run vineyards and exclusive boutique winemakers.
