Mount Field National Park is one of Tasmania's oldest and best known national parks and home of the Horseshoe Falls and Russell Falls. We travel through New Norfolk and the beautiful Derwent Valley where hop growing is a major farming activity. After lunch we get up close with Australian native animals at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Bonorong is a rescue centre for Tasmanian wildlife.

Mount Field National Park, 80 km from Hobart, is a World Heritage-listed area of ancient rainforest, famous for the variety of its ecosystems: rainforest, tall eucalypt forest, tree ferns at the foot of the mountains, and rich alpine and subalpine vegetation on the heights.

The tour also includes:

• A short overview of Hobart's main sights: the famous Salamanca Place, the historic Battery Point and the city lookouts (optional)
• A stop at the Salmon Ponds (1861), the oldest trout hatchery in the Southern Hemisphere, where you can feed the fish, visit the fisheries museum and the first fish hatchery in Australia, stroll through an old English-style park and try salmon pancakes (extra)
• A walk through the ancient forest of Mount Field with giant tree ferns and some of the tallest eucalypts in the world, which reach 90 metres
• The three-tiered Russell Falls, one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Tasmania
• A stop at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to watch the thrilling feeding of the Tasmanian devils and to meet other Australian animals, including kangaroos, koalas, wombats, possums and echidnas
• A stop in the historic town of Richmond (1820), with its well-preserved convict-era architecture, a model of old Hobart of the 19th century and the oldest stone bridge in Australia, and its cosy streets with galleries and souvenir shops
• Tastings of local cheeses at Wicked Cheese and wines at the boutique wineries of the Coal River Valley (optional, extra)

Entrance fees to the wildlife sanctuary, the Salmon Ponds and the national park are not included.
