Rottnest Island, 19 km from the coast, got its name from the Dutch in the 17th century, who found many small agile animals that looked like rats. It was proved only 150 years later that they were quokkas, a small wallaby, the main residents of the island. For a long time the island was used as a prison, and the cells, the lighthouse, tunnels and military barracks from colonial times and the Second World War remain as historic sites.

The main attraction of this small island (19 square km) is its wild and unspoilt nature, with 63 beaches, ancient endemic trees, a colony of sea lions and seals, 43 species of birds and friendly quokkas that love to pose for a selfie.
